Vegans, rejoice, as there are not one but five instalments of one delicious vegan restaurant that is so good, even the most carnivorous of customers will question their diets. From faux meat to delicious and surprisingly vegan-friendly desserts, hungry patrons in Bangkok simply cannot go wrong by frequenting this meat-free restaurant. This week, we visited Veganerie Concept in Bangkok, Thailand.
Veganerie Concept in Phrom Phong opened last year, but its first instalment opened two years ago in Mercury Ville. There are now a total of five branches in Bangkok, two of which are small outlets and only sell cakes, treats, and take away but are noteworthy all the same.
One of the co-founders, Jajah, has been a vegetarian for four years and vegan for three. So far, she does not miss meat at all. She chooses to not eat meat for her spiritual and physical health and finds that obtaining by this diet is good for her health, energy and just about everything else in her life.
“The most important thing is that it's yummy,” Jajah said. “I feel very sad I didn’t go vegan sooner.”
Her mother and co-founder, Kalayanee, quit eating meat, and she saw her health significantly improve. She soon decided to open the vegan restaurants in hopes that others would follow suit. A meat-free diet is seemingly a family affair, as Jajah's two brothers, mother, and her dad all abstain from eating meat.
Veganerie’s biggest clientele are vegetarians, vegans, and foreigners, but the restaurant hopes that more people, especially Thais, will visit and see how delicious vegan food can be when done correctly.
In addition to great food, Veganerie Concept is a warm and welcoming restaurant adorned with wooden furniture and coupled with sheek, black accents throughout. Hanging foliage only adds to the veggie vibe the eatery has encompassed, and vegan paraphernalia is found all over the quaint eatery. That, in addition to speedy wi-fi and plenty of seating makes this a perfect venue to enjoy a memorable meal on any night of the week.
People expect vegan food to be bland, but this is undoubtedly not the case at Veganerie Concept. The menu is intimidatingly full, with pages upon pages of mouthwatering finds. Diners can feast upon quinoa bowls, appetisers, salads, Buddha bowls, pasta, rice bowls, curry and bread roti, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, smoothie bowls, an all-day brunch, hotcakes, pancakes, and much more on the menu.
Recommended dishes include the vegan Italian crepe (฿250), a vegan crepe covered in an Italian style pizza sauce and filled with chewy soy sausages, champignons, soy cheese and cashew nut parmesan. The vegan BBQ pulled pork (฿310) made of mushrooms was eerily convincing and paired perfectly with French fries and three different dipping sauces.
The Hawaiian veggie teriyaki (฿290) was equally as delicious, made with cauliflower instead of chicken. One of our favourite dishes was the American classic (฿250): signature fried mushrooms, soy mayonnaise, and coconut syrup ... aka chicken and waffles.
Finally, no meal is complete without savouring one of Veganerie’s delicious desserts, especially the sweet blossom hotcake (฿250): a mouthwatering combination of vegan vanilla pancakes, almonds, banana, kiwi and more before being topped with vegan vanilla ice cream.
Alcohol is not served at Veganerie Concept, but what this venue lacks in booze it makes up for with its extensive and fantastic drink selection. Diners should be sure to pair their meals with one of their smoothies, with both sweet, chocolatey, and fruity options to choose from. The chocolate banana and peanut butter (฿175) was to die for, made with cocoa, soy milk, brown sugar, sweet coconut whipped cream and vegan dark chocolate ice cream. Those looking for something a bit healthier may instead opt for the peanut butter and jelly breakfast smoothie (฿170), made with banana, strawberry, peanut butter, soy milk, stevia and chia seeds.
Whether visitors want to discover for themselves just how delicious vegan food can be or simply want to sample a piece of faux meat or two, this is the restaurant to visit. Each dish on the menu is made with the hope that those not abiding by a meat-free diet will realise how delicious vegan cuisine is. Be aware that this is certainly not the case of all vegan food, as Veganerie’s menu is not only clean and chemical free, but it is also excellently prepared by their passionate team. It is certainly no exaggeration to state that Veganerie Concept is one of the best veg-friendly venues in town, and every self-proclaimed foodie needs to check out this scrumptious restaurant before departing the capital.
